The conference will bring together internationally leading researchers across a wide range of disciplines in both academia and industry to exchange ideas and discuss new research.

The 14th annual conference organised by the British Society for Strain Measurement will bring together leading international researchers from academia and industry to showcase research and innovation in experimental mechanics. The conference will be held in Belfast, Northern Ireland, hosted by Queen’s University. This year the conference will be jointly chaired and organised by a team of academics from across the U.K. and Ireland, led at Queen's University Belfast by Professor Adrian Murphy and Dr Damian Quinn.

The Conference will be held in Belfast. Belfast is a city in the United Kingdom and the capital city of Northern Ireland, on the banks of the River Lagan on the east coast of Ireland. The venue for the conference will be the historical Riddel Hall at Queen's University Belfast.
A welcome reception will be held at Belfast City Hall, a grand building in the Baroque Revival style with many connections with the famous ocean liner Titanic. Viscount William Pirrie who was Lord Mayor just before City Hall’s construction, was also managing director of Harland & Wolff Shipyard. He is the man credited as having the idea for both ambitious builds. He used many of his skilled workmen in the fit-out of City Hall which is why the interiors today are considered an incredible insight into the finish of Titanic’s lounges and suites.

The conference dinner venue will be the Great Hall at Queen’s University Belfast. The magnificent panelled walls of this spectacular venue holes a selection of portraits from the University’s art collection, creating a warm, powerful and theatrical space.

Conference themes
The conference covers all areas of experimental solid mechanics and aims to draw together researchers and industrialists from a diverse range of sectors, including but not limited to Aerospace, Automotive, Rail, Biomedical, Construction, Power & Energy. Abstracts are welcome on any topic that falls within this broad scope. The conference will have thematic sessions on specialist and emerging areas in experimental mechanics including:

Conference venue
The venue for the conference is Riddel Hall at Queen's University Belfast, a building of significant architectural and historical value. Originally founded in 1913 as a residence for female students the halls have been refurbished and repurposed as an intimate but world-class conference venue. Set in its own grounds close to the university and situated in a tree lined Victorian suburb of Belfast, renowned for its restaurants, bars, theatres and fine architecture.
Queen's University Belfast is a member of the Russell Group of 24 leading UK research-intensive universities. Founded as Queen’s College in 1845, it became a university in its own right in 1908. Today, Queen's is one of the leading universities in the UK and Ireland, providing world-class education underpinned by world-class research.
