More from Airbus Aerospace Integrated Research and Test Centre
Located in Bristol, Airbus Filton is home to world-class research, design, engineering, manufacturing and testing facilities for the Airbus family of aircraft, primarily focused on Wing, Landing Gear and Energy Systems.
With more than 110 years of history Filton site is home to over 2,800 Airbus employees. Our teams include many homegrown talents developed through our Apprentice and Graduate programmes. We share our unique site and work in collaboration with other aerospace companies including GKN.
Wings are our speciality. Our multi-functional teams focus on Wing development for all Airbus programmes, from concept through to production and in-service support. Not only does our highly skilled Plant team on Filton site assemble and equip all A400M wings, we are also the home of the Wing of Tomorrow programme, which prepares the Wing technologies, capabilities, skills and ecosystem to help Airbus in develop the aircraft of the future.
We pride ourselves on innovation. Our multi-million pound test facilities are some of the best in the world. Filton Site has the most advanced Fuel System and Landing Gear test facilities, with our Wind Tunnel offering an end-to-end bespoke testing service.
Filton is also home to the Wing Technology Development Centre (WTDC) and the Aerospace Integrated Research and Test Centre (AIRTeC), a £40 million state of the art facility designed specifically to provide the most advanced working environment and tools for Airbus, suppliers, partners, and academia. Looking to the future, we are contributing to Airbus’ decarbonisation journey, through a ZEROe Development Centre (ZEDC), launched in 2022.
The Aerospace Integrated Research & Test Centre (AIRTeC)
AIRTeC is a £40 million aerospace facility co-funded by Airbus and the UK Government. It serves as a cutting-edge space for Airbus, suppliers, partners, and academia, unique in Europe. Located on the Filton site, it reinforces the South West as a global aerospace hub. The Centre operates on an open access policy, allowing other aerospace entities to benefit from its advanced equipment and laboratory space.
At the heart of the facility is the Structures Test space that offers an adaptable Strong Floor and Strong Wall designed to accommodate large test specimens (up to 40m) such as Aircraft wings. Also, unique in Europe, the test centre includes a High Capacity Loading Test Machine, capable of applying loads equivalent to the weight of 240 double decker buses, testing structures up to 9m by 3m by 2m.
AIRTeC has 65,000m2 of collaborative workspace, enabling Airbus and its partners to work together to develop future technologies and cutting-edge ideas.
The innovative research and test facility is a flexible space that consists of 26 zones and state of the art capabilities with primary focus on:
Structures and Material testing - from full scale to a molecular level
Materials and Processes Research and development
Additive Layer Manufacturing research
